(Doggie Version AND Human Version)
Watermelon is a hydrating and refreshing fruit, especially on hot afternoons. This versatile recipe provides tasty treat options for both you and your dog.
Things You’ll Need:
· Sharp knife
· Cutting board
· Blender
· Fine mesh sieve
· Small silicone molds
· Half-sheet cookie sheet
· Pitcher
· Optional: Ice cube trays, ziplock bags or glass containers with lids
Ingredients:
· 1 small to medium seedless watermelon (3–5 cups cubed)
· ¼ cup water (for blending)
· 1 small lime – juiced
· Optional Add-ins:
· Dog-Friendly Herbs: Parsley, Mint, Basil (chopped)
· Human-Only Additions: Jalapeño (finely chopped), Cilantro, Lime Zest, Tajín
Instructions:
1. Prep & Puree:
Cut watermelon into cubes and add to the blender with ¼ cup water.- Blend until smooth.- Strain the puree through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher to extract juice. Save the pulp—it becomes the base for doggie treats
2. Doggie Treats:
Place silicone molds on a cookie sheet for easy transfer to the freezer.- Spoon the saved watermelon puree into the molds.- Sprinkle with parsley, basil, or mint (or leave plain).- Freeze until solid.- Once frozen, pop out the treats and store in: • A glass container with lid, or • A Ziplock bag (remove excess air before sealing).
3. Human Beverage:
Enjoy the strained juice as-is or customize it with: • Lime juice • Lime zest • Jalapeño • Cilantro • Tajín • Mint or parsley- Store the juice in an airtight pitcher in the fridge (good for 2 days).- Optional: Freeze some in ice cube trays with your favorite add-ins.
Storage Tips:
- Juice: Keeps for 2 days in the fridge.- Ice Cubes: Lasts much longer; great for making frozen drinks later.- Oversized Cubes: Use for an elevated cocktail/mocktail or blend into a slushy-style drink.
Pro Tip: Save 1 cup of watermelon juice in the fridge and freeze the rest. Oversized cubes with jalapeño and cilantro make excellent flavor boosters.
Final Notes:
Clear separation between human and dog-friendly ingredients is well-handled. You might consider adding a small caution like:"Note: Always introduce new treats to your dog in moderation to ensure they don’t upset their stomach."
