The Great “Hurry Up and Wait” AI Insemination Adventure with King Wrex

If you’ve ever heard someone say artificial insemination is stressful, I would like to gently confirm that statement… and then scream into a pillow for 45 minutes.
This was my first time ever doing the whole AI insemination process with King Wrex, and let me tell you, nothing prepares you for the emotional rollercoaster of trying to coordinate biology, vet appointments, FedEx deadlines, and a male dog who suddenly decides he has stage fright.
Step One: The Schedule That Controls Your Whole Life
It starts out simple enough.
You find out the female is coming into heat and suddenly your entire life turns into:
• What day is she on?
• What are her numbers?
• Is the vet available?
• Does FedEx still exist after 6pm?
• Do I need to sacrifice a chicken for good timing?
Everyone says, “It’s all about timing.” Yes. Timing… and also pure panic.
Collection Day #1: When the Vet Says “He’s Not Cooperating”
So first collection day rolls around.
We’re on the clock. Everyone is coordinating. Money is being spent. Stress is building. And I’m telling myself, we got this. Wrex is a pro.
Except this time, the vet needed me to drop him off at the clinic, which I had NEVER done before. Wrex usually handles business with confidence, but apparently the moment I leave, he decides: “I don’t know why I’m here and I will be filing a complaint.”
So I drop him off and I wait, and wait, and wait.
Finally I call because I’m spiraling, and the tech says the words no stud owner ever wants to hear: “Wrex isn’t cooperating.”
Oh no. Not my sweet King Wrex. Not my champion stud. Not my professional donor. So I hop in the car and drive down there like a mom picking up her kid who got sent to the principal’s office.
The SECOND he sees me Wrex instantly calms down like: “Oh. There you are. Yes, I remember my job now.”
And then he got straight to business.
Overnight Shipping: Where Dreams Go to Freeze
Once we got the collection, it was time for the next part of this mission: overnight shipping in a chilled container.
Which sounds simple until you realize this part of the process is basically like transporting the world’s most important tiny package while praying nothing goes wrong.
Because now you’re thinking:
• What if it gets delayed?
• What if the temperature is off?
• What if FedEx decides to take the scenic route?
• What if someone sets it next to a space heater?!
• WHAT IF IT FALLS OFF THE TRUCK?!
But thankfully, everything went smoothly and the package was shipped and received the next day.
The Plot Twist: “His Donation Was Used… But We Need Another One”
Now here’s the part that sent my stress into orbit.
Everything arrives, and the breeder used Wrex’s donation… but her numbers rose right after. Meaning timing wasn’t as perfect as we wanted.
So that following Monday she decides: “We should ship another collection.”
And I was like: “Yes. Great. Love that for us. Let me just go pass out real quick.”
Because I had never done it myself, and I was extremely anxious that I was going to mess something up. This isn’t like messing up a grocery order or being late to brunch. This is expensive for both sides, and if things go wrong:
• the female breeder loses an entire heat cycle
• that’s a huge financial hit
• and it’s emotionally exhausting too
It’s not just “oops”—it’s major pressure.
Collection Day #2: DIY Panic Edition
Thankfully, my regular vet is amazing and agreed to meet me at her house so we could do it together. Bless her forever because I was nervous like I was about to perform surgery with a YouTube tutorial open.
But we did it, we got the collection handled properly, and I rushed that precious chilled container to FedEx like I was delivering the final piece of a national security mission. And somehow… I made it in time.
Collection #3: Because Why Not
At this point Wrex had donated so much that I’m pretty sure he deserved a steak dinner, a trophy, and a standing ovation.
But the breeder ended up with all three of Wrex’s donations, and now we’re officially in the hardest phase of all:
The Waiting Game
Now all we can do is wait and hope she’s pregnant.
And honestly, after the chaos, stress, appointments, shipping deadlines, and Wrex’s brief moment of refusal to work without management present…
I am SO happy we had the opportunity.
Because if this works, we’re going to have some beautiful puppies and this whole “first time” insanity will become one of those stories you laugh at later…
(After your nervous system recovers.)
Final Thoughts: First Time Is Always the Scariest
I don’t care how experienced you are in dogs, doing something for the first time is nerve racking. Especially something this important.
But we did it. Wrex did his thing. FedEx did not ruin our lives .And now… we wait.
So please send good vibes, prayers, baby dust, or whatever fertility magic you believe in…
Because we are officially invested.
